Abstract

The meaning of protective instinct in the lyrics of the song “Nina” by Feast is analyzed through this research using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, which includes the concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth. This article aims to interpret the meaning of the protective instinct and how listeners interpret the song, using a qualitative-descriptive research method. Data was collected through document studies from various print and online media. Based on the results of the semiotic analysis of the lyrics of the song “Nina” by Feast, it is concluded that the denotative meaning is a representation of a father's efforts to protect his child, the connotation meaning is that the songwriter tells the sacrifice of a father to protect his child even though he is not together, the mythical meaning is that the author wants to say that every journey requires struggle and sacrifice like a hero in mythology who wanders to complete the task.
