Abstract

Background: Escherichia coli is a bacterium that causes diarrhea. Many reported the occurrence of antibiotic resistance against Escherichia coli. Some studies say that basil leaves contain secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins that function as antibacterial.

Aim : Knowing the Inhibitory Power of the Ethyl Acetate Fraction of Basil Leaves (Ocimum basilicum L) on the growth of Escherichia coli.

Methods : This research is a laboratory experimental study with a post-test-only control group design. This study used 5 groups, 2 control groups and 3 treatment groups. The treatment group consisted of the ethyl acetate fraction of basil leaves at concentrations of 12.5% , 25% , and 50% . The control group was a positive control K(+) with cotrimoxazole and negative control K(-) with 10% Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO). The data were tested using the Kruskal walls test and continued with the Mann-Whitney difference test

Results : In the Kruskal Walls test, there was a significant difference (p-value < 0.050), for the treatment of basil leaf ethyl acetate fraction. The largest average was obtained, namely the ethyl acetate fraction with a concentration of 12.5%. Followed by the Mann-Whitney test to determine the differences between groups, there were differences in the inhibition power of each concentration.

Conclusions : The Minimum Inhibitory Level of the ethyl acetate fraction of basil leaves on the growth of Escherichia coli is a concentration of 12.5. Also, there is a significant difference in each concentration of the ethyl acetate fraction of basil leaves on the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria.
