Abstract

English idioms are one of the crucial language skills for EFL students to comprehend. Any source can be used to learn English idioms, including YouTube, since many youtubers use English idioms in their conversations. Despite the importance and accessibility of studying English idioms, sadly, many EFL learners ignore English idioms because of some of the challenges they encounter. English Idioms inherently have a meaning that differs from their intended meaning. Therefore, understanding the meaning requires a strategy. This study aims to investigate the learning strategies based on experiences and personal perceptions about learning English idioms from youtubers’ content. This study uses a qualitative method with a narrative inquiry approach. The data was obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted with three people of Indonesian EFL learners as participants. The data obtained is processed using narrative analysis techniques. From this research, there are two important points, namely, the learning strategy used and the perceptions. First, Indonesian EFL learners use several strategies to understand the meaning of English idioms from youtubers’ content that they often watch, namely guessing the meaning from context, looking up dictionaries, and searching through the internet. Second, the perceptions of Indonesian EFL learners in learning English idioms from youtubers’ content tended to be positive. Participants felt it was effective, useful, easy to find, and added new insights.
