Abstract

The focus on pragmatic skills and real-world communication in language learning and teaching has increased, aiming to equip students with tools for efficient communication in a globalized society. The 10th grade of uppersecondary education is crucial for language acquisition, enhancing linguistic competency and managing cultural differences. This research aims to determine the types of speech act and the implementation of politeness in an Indonesian’s EFL textbook for 10th grade. To gather data, the researcher adopted a qualitative approach using the textual analysis method. The collected data consisted of sentences extracted from each dialogue within the “Interactive Book 'Active English': English for Senior High School Students Grade X.” Each sentence was scrutinized in terms of its type and function, based on the principles of Speech Acts and Politeness Strategies. The research findings indicate that the study encompassed 4 out of the 5 types of Speech Acts, as well as 3 out of the 4 types of Politeness Strategies. Notably, the mentioned textbook specifically employed the Directive Speech Act and incorporated the Positive Politeness Strategy in presenting each dialogue.
