Abstract
This research discusses figurative language in fantasy short movies. Many people
are unfamiliar with figurative language contained in fantasy short movies and
what the meaning of each figurative language is, therefore the writer is interested
in discussing it. In learning reading, there are still many obstacles faced by
students to understand the books given. Many teachers are looking for learning
media to motivate students. One of them is by using short films that are easily
found on YouTube channels. The obstacle is the use of figurative language. In this
case the writer tries to help teachers in understanding the meaning contained in
figurative language and through this discussion helps students' understanding of
metaphors, similes and other types of figures of speech. Students can expand their
vocabulary and understanding of the nuances of language. The writer chose
fantasy short movies from the youtube channel fairytales and stories for kids with
the titles "Goldilocks and the mystery book", "The goose girl", and "The lazy girl
story". The purpose of this study is to find the use of metaphor, personification,
simile, symbol and hyperbole in fantasy short films and to find out the connotative
meaning of each figurative language found. This research method is qualitative by
using documentation technique. The writer uses Perrine's figurative language
theory and Leech's meaning theory. From the research findings, there are 15
figurative language data including 4 types of metaphor, 2 hyperbole, 4 simile, 3
personification, 2 symbol and 15 connotative meanings of each figurative
language based on the findings of figurative language in fantasy short films.
Based on the results of the research, the most dominant figurative language is
metaphor and simile.
