Language is a crucial aspect of human life, enabling communication and
expressinggoals. Pragmatics studies how people comprehend and perform
communicative actsin real situations. Effective communication relies on
understanding the context of the conversation. Deixis, a part of pragmatics,
focuses on the relationship between language structure and context.
Understanding these aspects helps speakers and listeners communicate more
effectively. Students frequently struggle to understandthe material because
they are unsure of what or who the word refers to. The purposeof this research
is to explain the deixis found in descriptive text in textbooks used by 7th grade
junior high school students and to identify the most common deixis utilized
in descriptive text. The researcher employs the descriptive qualitative
technique for gathering data. The researcher collects data from a deixis
textbook, categorizes it based on types using Levinson’s theory, describes it,
and answer the research question. The data source is an ELT textbook used
by Cirebon's 7th gradeJunior Highschool. The result of the research showed
that the total of deixis foundedin students' English textbook were 170 deixis
word of five chapters contained deixisof utterances. The mostly types of
deixis obtained in English textbook were persondeixis with 110 words, the
second types were place deixis, with 26 words. The thirdtypes were time
deixis, with 18 words. The fourth types were social deixis, with 14word. The
last were discourse deixis, with 2 words. Mastering deixis can minimize
misunderstandings by better understanding context in writings and
discussions. Understanding the different types of deixis and their links to the
referent aids readers in comprehending text content and speaker meaning.
