Abstract

Communication is a fundamental thing needed by everyone to be able to socialize
well in the surrounding environment. In socializing, language and speech acts are
important. In this study, the speech acts be assessed through the theory of
politeness that has been presented by pragmatic experts. The data sources used to
analyze this problem are taken from English textbooks for grades 10, 11, and 12
of senior high school. The analysis method used in this research is qualitative
method and textual analysis. Some aspects that analyzed are about (1) what types
of speech acts are used by non-native male and female, (2) how the level of
politeness used in speech acts between non-native male and female. Then, the
purpose of the analysis is (1) to find out the types of speech acts used by nonnative male and female, (2) to provide a description of how the value of politeness
contained in speech acts used by non-native male and female. The analyzed data
collection is also classified based on the types of speech acts to be able to see the
differences contained in the analyzed data. Through data classification and
analysis in this study, the theory of politeness in the speech acts of non-native
male and female can be assessed according to the existing theory. As a result of
the research that has been conducted, the researcher can conclude that the speech
acts contained in the data sources that have been classified contain several types
of speech acts, and there are also several aspects that affect the politeness of the
speech acts.
