Abstract

YouTube application is one of the learning media that has received positive
ratings from students and teachers for improving English language skills, one of
which can help students learn to speak. Video is one of the audio-visual media
that can be used for teaching. Therefore, learning through video can create a
constructive atmosphere for language acquisition. This study used qualitative
research with questionnaire data collection techniques and interviews. The
participants in this study are seven English teachers who teach in secondary
schools. The questionnaire distributed online to all teachers used Google Form.
The informants for the interview are the English teacher that used the YouTube
application to teach speaking. Based on the results of the questionnaire, it was
found that most teachers had a positive perception of the use of the YouTube
application in teaching speaking. The teacher used YouTube to provide additional
information. The selection of videos is adjusted to the needs of the learning
material and majors. The learning strategy that is suitable for learning speaking is
Think-Pair-Share and discussion. YouTube has advantages such as providing a
variety of videos, easy access, offering good resources, and offering authentic
examples of everyday English spoken by native speakers. Besides that, teachers
often face challenges when using YouTube as a teaching media especially a lack
of facilities.
