Abstract

Anxiety refers to a state of uncertainty or hesitation regarding one's abilities or desired
actions. It is commonly associated with the feeling of tension experienced when learning
a foreign language. Thus, it is important to consider this aspect in the learning process.
The objective of this research is to identify the types and effects of anxiety and
investigate efforts or strategy for reducing it. The study was conducted with students at
SMK Pariwisata Kota Cirebon, utilizing a qualitative approach, specifically the
descriptive qualitative method. Data collection involved observation, voice recording, and
interviews. The researcher used voice recording devices and field notes to make
observations. Field notes were used to gather more precise data. The findings revealed
four aspects of anxiety: (1) concern about their abilities not meeting expectations, (2)
nervousness due to stage fright, (3) fear of making mistakes, and (4) shame stemming
from the fear of being ridiculed or embarrassed. The effects of anxiety included: (1) lack
of confidence, (2) inadequate mastery of the material, (3) forgetting or going blank, (4)
difficulty concentrating, and (5) unsatisfactory results. Additionally, the researcher
categorized the efforts employed by students to ease anxiety during English speaking
performances into several groups, as follows: (1) Preparation, (2) Relax, (3) Self
confidence, (4) Peer seeking, (5) Ignoring audiences (6) Holding a script.
