Abstract

Speaking English properly is one of the biggest challenges that students confront
in public school, and it has been suggested that fluency issues can be caused by a
lack of spoken English practise. This research article reports a qualitative method
study that explores student collaboration through speaking practice in English
class. This study was conducted with a group of 18 English students at a selfsupporting university in Gunung Jati. Qualitative data results compiled through
questionnaires, interviews and classroom observations were analyzed using
thematic analysis. The results show that students prefer to learn collaboratively
because with that they can share information and solve problems during practice
together. In addition, working collaboratively increases self-confidence because
they communicate with peers so that interactions are not too awkward or formal.
Thus, collaboration can positively develop students' speaking processes so that
they can be more courageous in expressing themselves.
