Abstract

Many research have been conducted to determine the types and causes of speaking
errors committed by EFL learners in speaking classes. This qualitative research
investigated the types and factors that causes of speech errors (i.e. cognitive
difficulties, situational anxiety and social factors) that influence learners to make
speech errors in speaking classes. The participants consisted of second semester
learners majoring in English at a university in Cirebon. The research design for this
research was descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were taken from the
learners' speaking performance in the form of words, videos and recordings. Data
collection techniques in this study, namely: observation and interview analysis. The
results of this study are: the types of speaking errors committed by EFL learners in
speaking classes are silent pauses, filled pauses, repeats and stutter. The causes of
speech errors can be analyzed from various aspects. The former consists of
physiological causes and psycholinguistic causes; and the causes consists of
cognitive difficulties, situational anxiety and social factors. This research would
likely contribute to the field of speech error research in the future, and the results
obtained from this research would have implications for English language learners
and lectures in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) contexts.
